How weighted grading works
Most courses divide your grade into categories with different weights. For example:
- Homework: 20%
- Midterm: 30%
- Final exam: 50%
Your overall grade is the sum of each category's average multiplied by its weight. If you have a 95% in homework (20%) and an 82% in the midterm (30%), your grade so far is:
95 × 0.20 + 82 × 0.30 = 19 + 24.6 = 43.6% out of 50% possible so far, which is 87.2% on completed work.
Frequently asked questions
How does weighted grading work?
Each category (homework, exams, etc.) has a weight that determines how much it counts toward your total grade. Your overall grade is the sum of each category's average times its weight.
What if my weights do not add up to 100%?
The calculator treats the remaining percentage as work you have not completed yet. It shows what you need on that remaining portion to hit your target grade.
Where do I find my category weights?
Check your course syllabus. It usually lists each category (homework, participation, exams) and its percentage of the total grade.
Can I use this for a class with extra credit?
If extra credit pushes your category average above 100%, enter that number. The calculator handles averages over 100%.
